In the afternoon of April 9, Professor Chen Wenhao, who is currently a professor in the Institute of Historical Studies of Zhanghua Normal University in Taiwan, gives a lecture in the Chongwu Building at Yanta campus, introducing the academic career and contributions of the Historical Geographer Wang Hui in Taiwan. This lecture is hosted by Professor Zhang Ping. Students from different schools and institutes attend this lecture.
Professor Chen Wenhao is a disciple of Professor Wang Hui’s, and is now working on the collection of Professor Wang’s academic works, so as to better conclude Professor Wang’s contributions to Historical Geography. In the lecture, Professor Chen firstly introduces the relationship between the Historical Geography Research of Chinese Culture University and the History Department of Zhejiang University, the development and the current situation of the Historical Geography Research of Chinese Culture University. Secondly, he introduces life experience, research contents and research results of Professor Wang, especially pointing out strengths and weakness of Professor Chen, also concluding four characteristics of Professor Chen. Specifically the four characteristics are paying special attention to Chinese Historical Geography, stressing on arranging the archives, stressing on the arrangement and research of local archives, and stressing on maps. In the same time, there are three defects of Professor Wang. They are lacking trainings of Modern Geography, lacking precise maps drawing skills and lacking appropriate verifications. However, these defects are mainly due to Professor Wang’s life experience and academic background, which should be understood by the juniors. After the lecture, there is also active interactions between Professor Chen and the audience.
